And apparently, there’s a new emphasis on the word “art.” Independent curator Rita de Alencar Pinto, who has devoted the past three years to incorporating the practice of high-end manicures into the art world, has now created an atelier for nail art on Chrystie Street. As part of Vanity Projects, which has hosted pop-up nail painting events at MoMA PS1, the Brooklyn Museum, and NADA since 2010, nail art now has a permanent home.
Like any museum or art gallery, the atelier hosts a series of rotating exhibitions of contemporary video art, which is projected on the salon’s walls. Visitors receive a pair of wireless headphones to listen to audio commentary about the works — while getting manicures, obviously. The current exhibit entitled “Girls, Girls, Girls” features pieces by 10 female video artists. The salon also hosts a nail artists in-residence program, which hosts the industry’s greatest talents in two-week installments.
As far as the actual nail art goes, the salon specializes in art history-inspired manicures,
featuring works by de Chirico, Magritte, Dali, Warhol, and Picasso, among others. Manicures and pedicures at this atelier start at $50, but we’re thinking the one-hour art education session you’re getting with the service is pretty much priceless. (Blouin Art Info)

DALLAS BUYER CLUB
Jared Leto, long of hair and full of beard, is sitting in the lobby of The Bowery Hotel in Lower Manhattan in a chair so ornate it could be more accurately described as a throne. Tapestried cushions rest atop elaborately carved mahogany that pirouettes every which way, culminating in two lions’ heads, one on the end of each of the arms upon which his delicate hands currently rest. He surveys the dimly lit room: low-slung, velvet-covered sofas in rich burgundies and emeralds, assorted oriental rugs, low wood-beamed ceiling, leather-paneled walls, logs crackling in a massive stone fireplace, and, right in front of him, Deepak Chopra.
“You see that?” the 42-year-old says in a hushed whisper. “Deepak Chopra!” His excitement at the presence of the holistic guru is as visible on his face as it is audible in his voice. “Hold on, this is hilarious. I gotta tell my buddy.” He fires off a quick text. In this hotel—a place where celebrities seem to love to be interviewed almost as much as they love to sleep—Leto seems to be the only one focused on Chopra; everybody else is more interested in him.
12 YEARS A SLAVE
These are the 20-year-old pop star’s first tattoos on her feet, but she has lots of others: a peace sign, an equal sign, a heart and a cross (all on her fingers); the words love inside her right ear and just breathe over her rib cage; a Leonardo da Vinci sketch on her right forearm, and above it, the Roman numerals VIIXCI, for 7/91, the month and year her parents first met. And on the inside of her left forearm, the words so THAT HIS PLACE SHALL NEVER BE WITH THOSE COLD AND TIMID SOULS WHO NEITHER KNOW VICTORY NOR DEFEAT. “It’s from a Teddy Roosevelt speech,” she says. “It’s about how people judge who wins and who loses, but they’re not the ones in there fighting.” In other words, “It’s about critics.”
Four days earlier, Miley performed at the VMAs. Maybe you heard about it. A lot of people got mad. Miley did things with a foam finger that made the inventor of the foam finger accuse her of having “degraded” an “icon.” Most people thought it was Miley’s fault, but Miley didn’t care. That’s what the Teddy Roosevelt quote is about. Haters gonna hate.
